The Nile River is over 4,000 miles long, but the Egyptians only settled along 750 miles of it. It is the worlds longest rivers and it is 13 miles wide.. The main reason that they setteled in Egypt was because of the Nile. The Nile gave the people water, food, and a way of traveling. It flowed south to north and contained many cataracts.
The Nile Rivers flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Since Egyptians were not able to trade or travel along the Nile River They did that stuff in the Mediterranean Sea. They could also get water and food from there. The Mediterranean Sea is located north of the Nile River and North of Egypt. They also stared a trade network with other people all around. the Mediterranean Sea.
There are six know cataracts in the Nile River. but there are more. They helped the Egyptians by not letting in invaders to come into Egypt.. This is a natural barrier this is also another reason why Egyptians settled there. The bad thing about the cataracts was they had a tough time traveling and trading things on the Nile. Also where a cataract is it is more shallow than in a different place in the Nile that does not have a cataract.
Silt was important to growing crops. Silt comes when the Nile River floods in August and Setember, but not when its not flooding in February and march. It washes up on the banks mud,, water, and tiny pepples, witch made fertile soil. Silt was the reason it was able to grow crops really well in Egypt.
Egypt was also protected by two deserts. They are called Sudan and Libya deserts. These are also good and bad. Good because it slowed down invaders because of the hot heat. The bad thing is it was also tough to trade goin through the desert. This also why the settled near a place that has a lot of water.
