Alonso Alvarez de Pineda the commander of a spanish exploration and was sent by the Governor of Jamaica (Francsico de Garay) to map the Gulf from Florida to Mexico. He also went to search for a northern waterway from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific so there would be a more direct trade route to China.He made the first map of the Gulf coast. Pineda was the first european to see Texan coast, but he did not walk on Texan land ( Though some people believe that he indeed did).

He was born 1494 in Spain.
Discovered that Florida is not an island.
Spanish explorer and cartographer.
He saw the Mississippi river in 1519 he named it Rio del Espiritu .
He was a Lieutenant in the spanish navy.
When he was killed the native americans flayed him and hung his skin as a trophey.
Little is known about his life.
Pineda continued south to Vera Cruz, Mexico where he met Cortes. He tried to strike a deal to share the land, but Cortes refused. Cortes tried to arrest him and his crew but Pineda retreated north. Cortes saw Pineda as a rival and succeded in capturing some of his crew.
Near present day Tampico, he attempted to establish a settlement. Though in January 1520 they were attacked by Huastec indians. He was killed along with everyone else beside 60 people.
