Ionic Compounds
An ionic compound is a chemical compound in which ions are held together in a lattice structure by ionic bonds. The positive Ions are called Cations and the negative ones are called Anions or polyatomic ions. They are held together by electrostatic force between the positve and negative Ions.
Ionic Compounds have an extreamly high boiling and melting point. Usually, when uou have ionic compounds, they form large crystals that you can see without a microscope eye. Table salt is an example of this. If you look at a crystal of salt, you will be able to see that it looks like a little cube. The Ions group together and form a crystal square.
When you put Ionic Compounds in water they create electricity. When you put Compounds in water the water pulls the positve and negative ions apart creating electricity.
Ionic compounds are between metals and non-metals they are formed form pure metals and nonmetals while molecular (covalent) compounds are between only non-metals. Molecular compounds are made by pure non-metal and it has a low melting point.
