Platinum
The earliest known use of platinum was in Pre-Columbian America, when Native Americans combined it with gold to create artifacts. However it is unlikely that platinum was recognised as its own metal at this stage. It is more likely that the first person to recognise platinum as its own metal was Julius Ceaser, he described it as ''an unknown and mysterious metal with some outstanding qualities, like a high melting point.''
Platinum is a metal element with the symbol Pt. Its atomic number is 78 and it is in group 10 of the periodic table. As of the 30th of October, platinum has been worth 1690.64 NZ Dollars per troy ounce. That's 54.19 NZ dollars per gram, this makes it the most valuable metal in the world. Platinum is lustrous (shiny) and malleable (flexible), Platinum is considered very useful for its high melting point.
Today Platinum has many uses; the most well-known being jewlery, but it has many more uses. In the medical field it is used in anti-cancer drugs and implants, some spark plugs in America have platinum tips, it is used in the production of hard disk drive coatings, The list really goes on and on.
