The three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam claim Jerusalem as a holy city. It is a major, significant aspect of each religion and is the center of their religious traditions. Followers of all three religions come to Jerusalem for the journey and experience of spiritual meaning. It is a major site for pilgrimages from all three religions and an area of religious-political tension. Jerusalem is the most important religious city in the world.
Jerusalem, a Sacred City
Christianity is a monotheistic religion established on the beliefs and practices based on the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus as embodied in the New Testament and emphasizing the role of Jesus as savior. Their holy book is the Bible which holds the history, traditions, life, and teachings of Jesus Christ. Jerusalem is important to Christianity because it is the sacred site of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.
Christianity
Islam is the monotheistic religious faith of Muslims, based on the words and religious system founded by the prophet Muhammad and taught by the Koran, the basic principle of which is total obedience to a unique and personal god, Allah. Jerusalem is significant to the Islam religion because it is the site of the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey to heaven.
Islam
Judaism,
Judaism is the monotheistic religion of the Jews having its spiritual and ethical principles embodied chiefly in the Torah and in the Talmud. For the Jewish people, Jerusalem is the center of their homeland and is the location of the remains of the Temple.
It is the most famous Islamic site because it is the crowning glory of Haram es-Shari. it is the oldest monument that still stands today and also the oldest surviving mihrab in the world. It is not a mosque, it is a Muslim shrine that is built over a sacred stone. the stone is believed to be the place where the prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven during his Night Journey to heaven.
This mountain is sacred to all Christians because they believe that Jesus went down this mountain on Palm Sunday, and taught his disciples in caves located in this mountain.
Only part of this wall is still standing in Jerusalem, but the Jews still worship it. They even lament it because it was destroyed in A.D 70 by the Romans. This is why the Europeans sometimes call it The Wailing Wall.
