Ukrainian Genocide-1932
Stalin became leader of the United Soviet Socialist Republics in 1924. He wanted to crush Ukraine's sense of nationalism and destroy the kulaks (peasant farmers) who had resisted the Soviet Union. After many failing attempts, he raised the peasants' taxes and grain quotas, causing millions to starve.
In the 12th century, Ukraine was founded near Kiev. Since then, it's fertile farmland has changed hands again and again. Due to it's location, control has been debatable between Poland and Russia. For a time, it was also part of the Austro- Hungarian Empire.
