Problems with Cities
Great Chicago fire of 1871
A lot of people were crammed into houses like this, paying 5 cents for rent.. Diseases, like Tuberculosis which almost the entire urban population was infected or was carring the disease.
Fires were made worse by congestion. There were no fire codes to help people out of burning places. A lot of people died int the Great Chicago Fire. It wiped out blocks and blocks of housing and businesses.
Transportation was a problem also. The streets were narrow and crowded. Horse and carriage were used, but they didn't know how dispose of the manure.
