There are many ways to prevent Listeria. You can make sure you always rinse raw produce such as fruits and vegetables under running tap water before cutting, cooking, and then eating. Also, you can scrub firm produce, such as cucumbers and melons, with a clean produce brush. Make sure you dry the produce with a clean cloth or paper towel. Lastly, you can separate uncooked meats and poultry from vegetables, cooked foods, and ready to eat foods.
Each year, about 1,850 people become seriously ill with Listeria and 425 die in the United States. Pregnant woman are 20 times more likely to get this illness. Some foods allow the bacteria that causes Listeria to multiply in refrigerators. Animals that are alive can carry the illness without being ill themselves. Listeria is also found in soil and water
