About 200,000 African Americans fought in the civil war. Most Afican Americans were fighting with the Union Army. African Americans were not only forced to fight because of slavery, but some were fighting for their country and to be free.
Even though African Americans were part of the war, they were still treated as slaves. The same rules applied to them as they did in slavery.
Robert Gould Shaw was the colonel in command of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, which entered the American Civil War in 1863. He wanted African American soldiers to have the same rights as white soldiers. His Infrantry lead at the front of the battle Fort Wagner.
Fort Wagner was the first battle that was led by an all African American Regiment. Even Thought it was a tough loss for the North, it prooved that all races have the same spirit and pride of their country on the battle field.
Union Army uniform that at first were only worn by white soldiers. African-Americans prooved that they were capable enough to be in the army and were givin the uniform.
