The Colony of Virginia
Come visit Jamestown!
- The first representative assembly in the New World convened in the Jamestown Church (see below). - There was a major military post that was part of a defense system to block advance up the James River. It was also used during the American revolution for defense.

Sir Edwin Sandys became the company treasurer and as a part of a series of reforms, headed the Headright System. The Headright System gave 100 acres of land to each of the investors of Virginia. It also gave 50 acres to each person who could pay their way to Virginia, plus 50 acres per family member.
In 1624, the settlement was taken into royal authority as a British crown colony.
Colonial Virginia was responsible for the taking of 90,000 Africans for slaves.
The House of Burgesses was the first legislative assembly in the American colonies. It first met on July 30, 1619. Only white men who owned a certain amount of property could vote for burgesses.
Although Virginia experienced "the starving time" and suffered many deaths (60 of the original 214 settlers survived), it is now back on its feet thanks to Lord De La Ware and his supply ships and the uplifting wedding of Pocahontas and tabacco entrepreneur, John Rolfe.
Virginia is considered the "center of all polotics" during the colonial era.
The colony of Virginia is filled with great plantations of Westover and Funston Hall- enormous testimonies to luxurious living nestled among fields of sweet- smelling tobacco.
