Imprisonment
Hucks imprisonment is the expectation to conform and become civilized.
The Mississippi River provides Huck & Jim with a means in their pursuit of freedom. n there pursuit of freedom pursuit of freedom
Jims imprisionment is his bondage and his desire to free his famiy.
In the novel, Huckleberry has been taken in by the widow Douglass and Miss Watson. They attempt to civilize Huck through fancy garments, religion, and school. But Huck doesn’t feel like himself, he feels entrapped, he urns for freedom, which leads him to travel on the river. On the river traveling with Jim, Huck lives free of rules and responsibility, not having to listen to the rules of society, following his own path, instead of the own laid out for him by anyone else. Huck’s abusive pap also makes him feel imprisoned, when he locks him away in a cabin and beats him with no hope of escape. Another character, Jim leaves a live of slavery at risk of being separated from his family, and hopes to gain his own freedom. The land is also a symbol of imprisonment for both Huck and Jim. They can be easily identified if they were to move on land, making their efforts futile. So Huck and Jim remain traveling among the Mississippi, with hope to find what they are looking for.
“But I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me & civilize me, and I can’t stand it. I been there before”. (pg. 293) “We lived in that old cabin, and he always locked the door & put the key under his head nights. He had a gun, which he stole, I reckon ,and we fished and hunted , and that was what we lived on. Every little while he locked me in and went down to the store, three miles, to the ferry, and traded fish and game for whiskey, and fetched it home and got drunk and had a good time, and licked me”. (pg. 24) "We said there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft." (pg. 116)
