After war she became a writer and lecturer, touring and abroad on women's rights, dress reform, health and temperance issues. She quoted women's clothing was immodest and inconvenient. She was elected as the president of the National Dress Reform Association in 1866. She even prided herself for being arrested numerious times for wearing full male outfits. She was also something of She was also something of an inventor, coming up with the idea of using a return postcard for registered mail.

She died in the Town of Oswego on February 21, 1919 and is buried in the Rural Cemetery on the Cemetery Road.

On November 11, 1865 President Johnson signed a bill to presentWalker with the Congressional Medal of Honor for Meritorious Service to recongnize her army commission. She was the only woman to earn the Medal of Honor. The medal was one of the country's highest military award too. But in 1917 her congressional Medal was taken away with 910 other medals because of when Congress revised the Medal of Honor standards now included only ''actual combat wtih an enemy'' Even so she refused to give back her medal but instead wore it everyday. That is until they took it from her when she died in 1919. Eventually, they gave her back her medal in 1977 saying her ''distinquished gallantry, self-sacrifice, patriotism, dedication, and unflinching loyalty to her country, despite discrimination because of her sex.''

She graduated from eclectic syracuse Medical College. She graduated at the age of 21., after three 13-week semesters of medical training . In all coasting $165. At 1856 she got married to Albert Miller, a physician.. They had a medical practice in Rome, New York. But they divorced 13 years later.

Mary Edwards Walker was born on November 26, 1832 in the Town of Oswego, New York. She was raised in an abolitionist family. In her family she had four sisters and one brother.

When the Civil War broke out she came to Washington to try to join the army. But she was denied commission as a medical officer, probably because she was a woman. So instead she volunteered for the war and served as an assistant surgeon. She was the first female surgeon in the US army! She first worked in the US Patent Office in Washington. And afterwards a field surgeon near the Union front lines for almost 2 years. In September 1863 she was appointed assistant surgeon in the army of Cumberaland. She was appointed assistant surgeon of the 52nd Ohio Infantry, and was thought that she served as a spy. She even crossed Confederate lines to treat civilians. But in 1864 she was taken prisoner by Confederate troops. She was imprisoned in Richmond for 4 whole months. But she was later exchanged with two dozen Union doctors for 17 Confederate surgeons. After her service in the war she was paid a total of $766.16 for her wartime service.
