On December 25, 1978, Vietnam launched a full-scale invasion on Cambodia trying to end Khmer Rouge attacks. On January 7, 1979, Khmer Rouge was overthrown. and Pol pot was deposed.
Since the motivation of the perpetrators was generally political, the case does not fit in the common United Nations definition for genocide.
Only in the past few years have international organizations, including the UN, begun to acknowledge the crimes.
Those who have spoken publicly all lay the blame for genocide on Pol Pot, and claim no knowledge of the killing. They have also blamed people who are dead and can't argue.
