Peranakan houses are painted in pastal colours and have roofs with wooden fringes. It gives the houses a distinctive look unlike other houses in Singapore.
Each house has a little verandah in front where people can gather in the evenings. This can foster friendship among neighbours.
The front entrance has two doors - a half door also known as pintu pagar and a proper door. The pintu pagar allows for ventilation and privacy too.
Some houses share a common five foot way. I prefer houses with a verandah as it is more cosy and offers more privacy.
Houses also have iron bars on the ground floor windows to keep out burglars. This is safer for everyone!
The pintu pagar has elaborate wooden carvings of animals and plants. It must have taken a lot of work and effort to do this!
