There is no rose without thorns.
This story starts out in Mexico, on the farm and estate that Experanza's father owns. After some very unfortunate events, Esperanza and her Mama must flee to California to escape from his father's terrible stepbrothers. Following the seasons of the harvest, the story progresses as different fruits are in season and centers on the troubles that are common for the workers who harvest the fields and the fruits. The story follows Esperanza's tough transition from being a pampered, wealthy girl to learning how to do laundry, sweep, and take care of the house. Poverty and struggle are something entirely new to Esperanza and she has a difficult time learning to accept her new home, friends, work, and life. With the help of a servant soon-to-be best friend, Miguel, Esperanza learns how to make sense of the world around her and how to appreciate what she does have. While she thought she had everything she wanted on her estate in Mexico, she comes to realize that the most important things in life cannot be purchased. In only a short time, Esperanza goes form a young 13 year old girl who understands little about the hardships of life to being a worldly 14 year old who appreciates the small miracles that occur everyday.
