THE TIGER RISING
We don’t know a lot about Rob but what we do know is that he discovered a tiger. Caged up way back in the woods where not many people know about it, Rob keeps the tiger a secret from all those around him except for one special girl named after the Sistine Chapel. As he and Sistine debate over whether or not to let the tiger free, Rob is forced to confront some events and people from his past that he would rather not have to face. The fierce, powerful tiger gives Rob something strong to hold on to when he wants to keep his fears packed away. But Sistine knows that some things just have to be set free and faced head on. Some things should not be ignored or pushed aside. Rob keeps his fears, weaknesses, and things he doesn’t want to think about caged up in himself just like the tiger. The question is: When is he going to decide to let them free?
You keeping all that sadness down low, in your legs. You not letting it get up to your heart, where it belongs. You got to let that sadness rise on up.
Possible Activities: Have students think about what animal would best represent themselves. Do research about the animal and create a poster explaining it. Discuss the different settings and what they represent. The school bus, the woods, the Kentucky Star, etc.
