Theme- life as a teenage outcast & importance of speaking the truth and telling someone your problems importance of friendship
Plot- During the summer before her freshman year Melinda was at a party and was raped by an older high school boy, Andy Evans. In a moment of panic she called the police, turning her friends and most of the school against her. Melinda struggles through the year watching her ex-best friends continue a normal life. The only friend she makes is a new girl, Heather. Melinda does not talk very much and keeps to herself around Heather and her family, and she does not tell anyone what happened at the party. It isn’t until the end of the year when Rachel starts dating Andy that she decides to tell her. Rachel does not believe Melinda, but in the end she stands up to him and finally speaks.
