The Brandt Line...... Is It Still Relevant???
Whats the brandt line???
In the 1970s, the then German Chancellor, Willy Brandt, proposed a model that divided the world into two halves. The Brandt Line was the visualisation of this and was termed the North-South divide (as depicted in Figure 1).
Figure 1.
how????
In 1980, Brandt went on to chair an independent commission that looked specifically at development issues, culminating in the publication of the Brandt Report. The report concluded that ’developing nations were economically dependent on developed nations, which dominated the international rules and institutions for trade, money, and finance’.
So........Is It relevant????
When published the brandt line was very relevant as it was the first of its kind and it was purely based on GDP as there was no other factors of measurement avalible at that time. The problem with this is that GDP doesn't take into account where the money is spent. Today however, the brandt is only relevant today at a glance beacuse it doesn't take into account all the other factors of measurement that contribute to determining a 'north south' devide, such indexes include the human quality of life index (HQMI), crude death rate (CDR). The reason for the change in relevance is due to FLAT (foreign investment, labour, aid and trade). The countries benifiting from FLAT are the newly industrialised countries which were formerly classed as 'poor south' in brandts original study but now they growing towards becoming 'rich north'.
