Was the impact of 19th century imperialism on India positive or negative? Give at least three pieces of evidence to support your answer.
One could argue that the impact of imperialism was by far negative because of the deaths and destruction British may have caused, However, I believe the cruel customs British took away from Africa, the improvements British made to Africa, and Stabilization of the Land Tax is more then enough for a positive effect. The Indians believed in many sacrificial rituals that took the lives of countless people. Thugee, the ritual murder of travelers in worship of the goddess Kali was made illegal. This saved literally millions of lives. As well as suttee, the enforced burning to death of Hindu widows on their husbands' funeral pyres. The British improvements to Africa were, in my opinion, one of the greatest positives to ever occur in Africa. The British not only built cities, roads, railways, but schools. These new developments made transportation and Education much more accessable prior to the British. The school system allowed for many Indians to gain and education and make more out of their life then they would have without the british. Before the British rule, all Indians were required to pay a land tax to the ruler. However, this was often increased when the ruler needed or wanted money for something. This often caused great hardship for regular people. The British took over collection of the Land Tax, but kept it at a set rate, so people would not suddenly have to scavage extra money for a sudden tax increase. To conclude, The Land Tax staying the same for all people, the Improvements British made including schools, railways and cities, and the banning of all sacrificial rituals that took the lives of millions of people is what makes me believe that the impact of 19th century imperialism actually helped India in more ways then the negatives were harmful.
