The Rwandan Genocide was the 1994 mass killing of an estimated 800,000 people. Over the course of approximately 100 days from the assassination of Juvnal Habyarimana on April 6 through mid-July, at least 800,000 people were killed, according to a Human Rights Watch estimate. Other estimates of the death toll have ranged between 500,000 and 1,000,000 or 20% of the country's total population. The artist of the painting is Pete Driessen. The killing was well organized,[8] and by the time it had started, the Rwandan militia numbered around 30,000 one militia member for every ten families and was organized nationwide with representatives in every neighborhood. The artist showed a person in pain, symbolizing how people felt during the genoice. I selected the piece of art because it was like a person crying for help. I found it moving because I it looked too depressing not to click. This painting evokes a series of feelings, but mostly sadness. When one looks at it, they will frown. Both Hutus and Tutsis were involved in this mass genocide. The assassination of Habyarimana in April 1994 was the proximate cause of the mass killings of Tutsis and pro-peace Hutus. The mass killings were carried out primarily by two Hutu militias associated with political parties: the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi. The genocide was directed by a Hutu power group known as the Akazu. The mass death also marked the cancelation of the peace agreement meant to end the war, and the Tutsi RPF restarted their offensive, eventually defeating the army and gaining control of the country. In conclusion, The painting is very good at showing the lives of thousands of people crying for help as depressing as it may sound. This is why I chose to do my essay on a painting representing genocide, on this artists painting.
