Fingerprinting- there are three main types of fingerprints; loops, arches and whorls. loops are the most common of all fingerprints, then whorls and finally arches. the distinguishing feature of a fingerprint is the amount of deltas it has (small triangular shapes.) If a fingerprint has two or more deltas it is an arch. If there is one delta it is a loop and if there are no deltas it is a whorl. each category of fingerprint can be broken down into other sub-categories. Whorls- Plain Whorl Loops- Central pocket loop and Double loop Arches- Plain Arch and Tented Arch
In the MyCSI programme this year we learnt about forensic scientists and the way that they work. We studied hair and fibre identification, handwiting and forgery, blood splatters, fingerprinting and tyre tracks. We also watched videos about Autopsies and and Episode of NCIS so that we could critically analyse itbased on how realistic it is compared to real forensics.

Handwriting and Forgery- Handwriting is an individual feature that differs from person to person. The handwriting differs by whether it is joined up or not and whether it is written with the left hand or the right hand (left handers tend to smudge the ink when they drag their hand across the page.) Scientists use slant tests to measure the angle of the writing and other tests that measure the space between and the height of letters and words.
Autopsies/Post mortums-Tools: -Scalpel: very sharp blade used to cut through soft tissue and muscle. -Rib Cutters: look like gardening shears and used to cut through the chest cavity. -Bone Saw: thick toothed blade used to cut trough bones and other tough meaterials found in the body. -Scissors -Toothed Forceps: used to pick up heavy organs -Oscillating Saw: the electric saw used to cut through the skull to remove the brain - Skull chisel - used for helping to carefully pry the skull cap off -Enterotome - special scissors used to open the intestines -Hagedorn needle - a heavy needle used to sew up the body after examination
