Dusk. The story begins around one evening during the carnival season in a European city. The story is happy and carefree in the beginning, but it quickly changes into dark and scary when the two characters move into the palazzo.
In the story, Montresor is the antagonist as he causes the conflict to Fortunato, the protagonist; however, one could also say that Fortunato has antagonist like qualities as well because Montresor says he is vowing for revenge because of something Fortunato did.
One of the rising actions in Cask is when Montresor tricks Fortunato into going down into the catacombs under the Montresor estate. We know that by taking him into the cold dungeon, Fortunato will find his death.
