Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse was a man who was on the road to a career in Law but got horribly sick in his early 20's. It was only then that he started painting and realized his love for art. He is known for using bold extravagant colours in his artwork. Somewhat because he saw others art work (such as John Russell, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pablo Picasso and many others) that had a lot of colours and he seemed to like it, although his pieces have much more colour than these artists. He also wanted his artwork to "have a light joyousness of springtime". Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro painted landscapes and flowers from spring. Instead of using objects from spring, Matisse used the colours. Another one of his inspirations to use colour was Japanese art. His mother may have inspired this as well because she painted on China. Matisse's mother also encouraged him not to follow the rules of art, but instead to follow his emotions. Matisse was inspired by women as well and painted many pictures of them.
Who inspired my artist?
Henri Matisse wrote "In modern art, it is undoubtedly to Cezanne that I owe the most". He was very inspired by the way Paul Cezanne used colour as an element of composition. Even though Matisse had many inspirations Cezanne was the biggest one. Although Cezanne painted mainly fruit, he also painted women too, as did Matisse. If you go deep enough and compare the two artists work you can see how much Matisse’s work is similar. He just has a slightly different style.
