Hazel White strode casually down the sidewalk, towards the gates of the community pool. When she reached the gates, she stopped to fumble in her purse with '' Razzle, Dazzle Girl! '' nail-polished fingers for her pass. After sifting througha months worth of lip gloss tubes and receipts, she found what she wanted. Hazel showed the lifeguard her pass, set her thingts down at an empty chair, and made an arcing dive for the water. She loved the water, it made her feel so powerful.. She brought herself to the surface and found her sister Penny sitting several feet above her head in the lifeguards chair. Penny was wearing that smug expression she often wore when she thought she was better than you. Which, really, was most of the time. So now, Penny sat up there looking like royalty. Hazel couldn't even say anything to this. The only reason Penny could sit up there looking like a damn princess was because she was dating one of the actual lifeguards. Hazel ssighed and tried to avoid the commanding gaze of her sister. Later, after swimming a few laps, Hazel noticed with pretty much unrestrained glee that the life guard who was supposed to on duty had woken up from her fitful nap and was coming to reclaim her chair. Hazel snickered happily and dove under the water. And then... things seemed to happen in slow motion. The moment Hazel dove, Penny stepped back and found not sturdy plastic, but thin air. She found herself falling to the ground, and even though she was plummeting at amazing speed, things seemed to happen in frames. Her shruiek split the air just as Hazel broke the water's surface, plunging downward like her sister. And from the depths, she saw it all. She saw Penny's limp form slam against the side of the pool with a crack like a gunshot, saw her body sink steadily downward. She saw a plume of red rise from her sister and cloud the clear water. Hazel opened her mouth to scream, forgetting she was underwater, and swallowed a mouthful of water mixed with her sisters blood. She started to feel dizzy, and wondered if maybe, she could just drift away, if that wouold make all this better. NO. Penny mighgt still be saved, she had to fight for her sake. She broke the surface with a scream, and the lifeguard who had been watching leaped back in horror, thinking for a moment it was Penny's ghost, seeking revenge. Another life guard started blowing her whistle and screaming over and over like a demented cuckoo clock; : '' Please exit the pool! '' Hazel stared at the steady forming red cloud. There was blood in the water and it was Penny's.
This is the story of two girls whose lives were both changes forever by just a single event. Why did it happen that way? It could have been so different...
