The Race for Pennsylvania Governor
The Democrat: Dan Onorato
Political Experience Before campaigning in 2010 for Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Corbett began his career as an assistant district attourney in Pittsburgh's Alleghany County. After three years in this position, he was hired in 1980 as an assistant United States Attourney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. In 1983 Corbett went into private practive and during this time, won his first election as a township commissioner in the Pittsburgh suburb of Shaler Township. Not long after he re-entered public politics in 1988, George H. W. Bush appointed him to again serve as a United States Attorney. He held this position until resignation in 1993. Corbett was appointed to the position of State Attorney General, serving 1995-1997 and again from 2005 to the present when he was elected to the position in 2004 and again in 2008. He won the Republican nomination for the 2010 election for governor, and is up against Democrat Dan Onorato in the general election.
The Republican: Tom Corbett
Political Experience Preceding his 2010 campaign for Governor of Pennsylvania, Dan Onorato practiced as a private attourney until 1991, when he was elected to the Pittsburgh City Council in his hometown. He served two terms in this position, and in 2000 he was elected Alleghany County Controller (or chief finnancial advisor). In 2003, he won the position of Alleghany County executive, where he currently serves as Chief Executive. Onorato won the Democratic nomination for the 2010 election for governor in May, and will soon face Republican Tom Corbett in the general election.
Political Ideology Tom Corbett's political beliefs lie in a limited role of government in the lives of the businesses and people of Pennsylvania. He claims that if elected governor, his administration will be guided by fiscal discipline, limited government, and free enterprise. Corbett feels that the government should only spend what they need to (revenue equaling expidenture) and operate under a cyclically balanced budget. He also notes his objevtive to reduce the size and cost of government, and to generally keep governmental intervention in personal liberties and the economy to a minimum. He affirms this ideal with support of the freedom of private businesses to operate competitively for profit with minimal government regulation (expanding Pennsylvania's economy through innovation and growing small business). Tom Corbett's political ideology favors a smaller role of government, which is evident in some of his political and economic ideas for Pennsylvania.
Political Ideology Dan Onorato, like his opponent, believes in a smaller contribution of government in the lives of Pennsylvania's citizens and businesses, but specifically in its size and operation. He supports enacting term limits and reducing the size of the Senate and the House, yet he is also for improving accountability and transparency in state government. Economically, Onorato's chief focus will be further establishing the private sector if elected governor. In this case he is concerned with limiting the role of government in the control of small businesses and not just in the physical aspect but also in the practice of business. Dan Onorato's political ideolody favors a limited government economically as well as politically, although he also believes the state legislature should be a present and active force in making political decisions.
