The horror stopped after two years, but there was still a lot to be done. Talks of peace failed in 1991, and it took five years for them to actually sign an agreement. Many of the people responsible for the killings were protected by amnesty laws. Some Mayans are still oppressed today.
The killings started in 1982, and the government took no mercy on the Mayans. They would beat children, rape women, pillage towns, and cut open the wombs of the pergnant. Many revolutionaries tried to help, but there simply were not enough of them.
