Education in Ancient Greece
How did people in Ancient Greece think children should be educated?

- In ancient Sparta the purpose of education was to produce a well-drilled, well-disciplined marching army. - Every Spartan was required to have a perfect body even the girls.

- In ancient Athens the purpose of education was to produce citizens trained in arts. - Education was used to produce citizens who were peacful and had war skills. -The only things that were required for the children to learn were to learn to play the lyre and learn the words of Homer. The teacher got to chose what else to teach. For example math, drama, or writing.

At age 6 or 7 boy went to military school. At school they learned the necessary skills to be a good soldier often the things they did were very painful. The girls also went to school when they were 6. At school the learned gymnastics and wrestling. When they were 18 they were given a husband.
Until the age of 6 boys were taught at home by their mothers. Then they went to school. At school they had to learn 2 main things- poetry written by Homer and how to play the lyre. Then they went to military school for 2 years.When the boys were 20 they graduated . Girls did not go to school. They did learn some things at home though.

In Athens teachers could choose to teach their students pottery
In Ancient Athens school was probably much like the video above. The only difference is that men were the teachers. they mainly learned poetry written by Homer and to play the lyre.
