When making a layup (shooting the ball while running) shoot the ball, ". . .vertically upward with respect to your own body. If done correctly the ball will then arch perfectly into the basket for the score!" (P. Beauchamp). (SCROLL) "When you are shooting a layup, . . . you are already in motion. By pushing the ball and running. . .,"(P. Beauchamp). "The ball's velocity would be the sum of your speed and the ball's," (Willis, Bill). If the player rushes to the basket and pushes the ball towards the hoop, doubling the velocity and causing over shooting, the ball will come flying back towards them or in another direction. "But shooting at the basket, which is a much smaller target and at a different distance each time . . ., would be a hard shot to make while you're moving towards the net," (Willis, Bill). By doubling the velocity when over shooting causes the ball to want to continue to travel in the same speed, which is an example of inertia, and causes the ball not to go in the net yet to go in different directions after hitting the basket ball goal.
"Rather than practice this difficult skill, throwing from farther away while moving towards the net, players master the skill of the layup. They move their whole body through the air, protecting the ball as long as possible, and put it in the net when (SCROLL) they're so close they can't miss,"(Willis, Bill). The layup is most easiest shot to make because you are basically putting the ball in the net.
"A good layup happens when the player does not take a shot, but uses the speed of his body to put him near the net," (Willis, Bill). "When you are shooting the layup, it is also interesting to learn about the principle of Inertia," (P. Beauchamp). Ineritia is the (SCROLL) reluctance of any body to change its state of motion.

In these videos they show the proper way to shoot a layup. It is good to use your speed and place your body near (SCROLL) the net, but it is important extend the arm to make sure the ball gets in the net.
(SCROLL) Image by NBANets. I choose this picture because the player shows the power as he makes a layup.
(SCROLL) Image by Welfl. I choose this picture because the player shows the perfect form to make a perfect layup.
