Queen Victoria
by Kathryn K.
Top Ten 1) Victoria entered a state of depression and isolation after her husband, Prince Albert, suddenly died of typhoid fever in 1861. 2) During this time, Queen Victoria shared her ideas on marriage, saying things like “I think people really marry far too much; it is such a lottery after all, and for a poor woman a very doubtful happiness.” 3) Queen Victoria is also known for her strong thoughts about pregnancy and infants; she remarked, “Being pregnant is an occupational hazard of being a wife” and “I don’t dislike babies, though I think very young ones are rather disgusting." 4) Because of her seclusion from the world, by 1870, Queen Victoria’s popularity was at its lowest point. 5) When the conservative Tory Benjamin Disraeli took the position of Prime Minister, Queen Victoria took an instant likeness to him. 6) Disraeli was very charming and witty, and not to mention brilliant when it came to flattering royalty. 7) Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone, a Liberal, would battle for the title of Prime Minister for years; Queen Victoria much preferred Disraeli. 8) In 1876, Disraeli crowned Victoria Empress of India. 9) The Queen celebrated her Golden Jubilee on June 21st, 1887, marking her 50th year as queen. 10) Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee ten years later; she became Britain’s longest reigning monarch, a title that she still holds to this day.

The picture to the right shows an aging Victoria; her grimace makes us think that she may have been thinking about her deceased husband, or perhaps William Gladstone.
Franz X. Winterhalter's painting portrays the queen in 1842, a earlier time in her reign.
The last 30 years of Queen Victoria’s life were greatly influenced by emotion. They began with the queen coming out of the slump that her husband’s death had thrown her in. Victoria is famous for quotes regarding marriage, such as, “I think people really marry far too much; it is such a lottery after all, and for a poor woman a very doubtful happiness” (“Queen Victoria Quotes” 1). Luckily, with a generous amount of help and guidance from Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, England’s longest reigning monarch was able to pull herself out of isolation and return to being the strong woman she once was, saying things like “We are not interested in the possibilities of defeat. They do not exist” (“Queen Victoria Quotes” 2). On January 22nd, 1901, Queen Victoria finally passed away, thus ending her reign of 63 years, seven months, and two days. She knew that she had been nearing her end, but Victoria was not afraid. The queen believed that she had accomplished many things, and her reward would be reuniting with Albert for eternity (Glendinning 163-168). Victoria had experienced a great deal of achievements, and the queen also witnessed an evolution in English politics as well as an expansion of the British Empire. Though Queen Victoria suffered some tragic misfortunes, she was able to rebuild herself and return to being the optimistic queen that Britain knew and loved (“The Life & Times of Queen Victoria” 3).
