Leprosy is caused by the organism Mycobacteriumleprae. It is not very contagious and has a long incubation period, which makes it difficult to determine where or when the disease was contracted.
Leprosy is an infectious disease that has been known since biblical times. It is characterized by disfiguring skin sores, nerve damage, and progressive debilitation.
While there is no vaccine available for the prevention of leprosy, scientists investigating the disease hope to develop one. Leprosy can be cured with medicines; therefore, an early diagnosis may reduce associated symptoms and complications.
The structure of this pathogen is considered to be bacillus, or rod-shaped.
