Endangered Species: The Dugong
Dugons are disappearing or extinct in most of the 37 tropical countries that have been home to them in recent times.
Dugongs are endangered due to hunting. This species is a target because of their prized hide and blubber. Dugongs also produce valuable ivory products, like their teeth and tusks. Their bones can be used for medicinal purposes. Additionally, dugongs can be killed by collisions with motor vehicles.
The Dugong is an aquatic mammal found in the coastal waters of Australia, Africa, and India. The scientific name for the dugong is Dugong dugon. This species is also referred to as a “sea cow” because it is the only marine mammal to graze exclusively on grasses. These creatures are long lived—dugongs can live to be 70.
