The Lakota are a group of Native Americans that are characterized by their emphasis on ideals such as community, affinity, cooperation, and strength. The term Lakota translates to “an alliance of people.”
The Hopi tribe lived in small desert villages near Phoenix, Arizona. The Hopi tribe was given the name,”The peaceful ones” because they lived at peace most of the time. The Hopis had brown skin, flat noses, and had large mouths.
Native Americans preformed dances for gods and chiefs. Now Native Americans perform these dances to honor people at ceremonies of all sorts; some dances are for fun.
The Iroquois clans have their own names of different animals. They provide kinship with the clans members in the other villages.
The Lakota tribe’s wolf symbol means Intelligence and Leadership of a revered hunter. The wolf symbolizes cunning. They believed a special spirit in a man enabled to become a successful hunter.
The name of the Lingit tribe means “people”. There are 700 speakers of Tlingit today. The language they speak is Athabaskan. The mythology of the Tlingit tribe related stories of people changing into animals by the Great Spirits.
This is the Carnegie museum of Natural History. It’s one of the four Carnegie museums in Pittsburgh, PA. Our Secondary Reading class at Karns City H.S. visited the exhibits there on April 21, 2009. Mrs. Smith won the trip for us by writing an essay to Target!
