The Heart
The parts of the heart
The ventricles and atria are what make the heart beat. They contract and relax which causes blood to pump through the heart. Electrical impulses from the nervous system travel to the heart and trigger the heart's beating. The rate at which your heart beats is determined by how much oxygen saturated blood the body needs. If you are not doing anything physically demanding, your heart beats 50-100 times per minute. During physical activity your heart beats well over 100 times per minute.
Deoxygenated blood moves from the right atrium to the right ventricle, then through the pulmonary artery where it is carried to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood get oxygenated and is then carried back to the heart through the pulmonary vein. The blood enters the left atrium and the to the left ventricle where it is pumped out of the heart. The aorta is where the blood leaves the heart.
