"They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions," said Atticus, "but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." pg114
"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see through it no matter what."pg112
"There's a lot of ugly things in this world, son. I wish I could keep 'em all away from you. That's never possible."
Atticus' rebels a huge social norm by defending Tom Robinson. He did this for the sake of his conscience because he couldn't live with himself and says he couldnt worship God if he didn't take the case. He also does it for his children to send them the right message of eqaulity and courage. His rebellion was always for good causes and Atticus did what he knew was right regardless of authority and society. These choices earned the Finch's a lot of ridicule and even put them in danger. It caused Atticus grief but he never thought twice about his decisions.
