Mohandas Gandhi
They cannot take our self-respect if we do not give it to them. - Gandhi
I believe this quote means that no one can take your dignity or self-respect unless you hand it over to them. You are in control of your self-respect and you should never give it up. No one has the power to take away others self-respect and it should always be this way. I think that people's self-respect should be their most prized possession.
Gandhi always told India to never let the British take away their dignity or it would mean that they had lost. I think this quote helps explain Gandhi's thinking. Gandhi was all about civil disbedience and India used it to win their independence. Instead of violence and weapons, India fought the British with their self-respect. They never lost it or gave it up and in the end they won their fight against the British.
Many people in todays world lose their dignity or self-respect. I think that once they lose it it's very hard to get back. People need to treasure their dignity and never give it up. It's an important thing to have and without it people can take control of you. People chose to give up their self-respect because no one has the power to take other people's away.
