Global Interactions Project: Trans-Saharan Trade, Black Death, Conquistadors
The Trans Saharan Trade
The Trans Saharan Trade was how the people of West Africa traded among themselves. This extensive trading system connects much of Africa. The routes in the desert were extremely long and very dangerous. To make is across the desert it could take up to three months. To transport through the desert more than 1,000 camels were gathered and caravanned across the desert. Gaining control of the trade routes led to conquest and rivalry and in the end it led to the rise and fall of African kingdoms.
The Conquistadors
The Conquistadors were Spanish conquerors who arrived in the Americas. They settled on the islands of Hispaniola, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. Throughout these areas the conquistadors seized the Native American's gold ornaments and then made them pan for more gold. They also forced the Native Americans to convert to Christianity.
The Black Death
The Black Death was a plague that struck Europe in 1348. It ravaged cities causing hysteria and death. About 1/3 of the population of Europe died. The primary cause of the disease were transmitted by fleas carried on the backs of rats. The rats would come from the ships coming from Asia and would escape from the boat and in turn infected the European population.
