The Conquistadors
• What were the conditions like for the travelers?
• What were the motives for the interaction?
• What were the short and long term consequences of the interaction?
The short term consequences were that Cortez and Pizarro conquered the Aztec and Incan empires and sent treasure fleets back to Portugal. Many diseases were spread so the germs created plagues that killed off millions of people. The long term consequences were that both Spain and Portugal settled huge portions of South and Central America and parts of North America making these two countries huge empires during the 1500-1700's.
The Conquistadors had to bring horses, mules, guns, food, water, and ammunition on these tiny wooden ships called Galleons. It took over a month to cross the Atlantic ocean if they were lucky. Also, navigation was so poor that they spent a lot of their time lost.
The Spanish and Portuguese adventurers wanted to get very wealthy and powerful and they also thought that they could bring these "heathen savages to Christ." Aztec and Inca empires had enslaved all of their neighbors, and the neighbors hated their masters so they were persuaded to join the Conquistadors in this war of conquest.
