The Trans Saharan Trade
• What were the conditions like for the travelers?
•What were the motives for the interaction?
• What were the short and long term consequences of the interaction?
The short term consequences were that although some merchants died taking this risk many others made huge fortune in trading pepper, ivory, slaves, salt, and gold. In the long term the rival kingdoms competed for trade, went to war with each other, and rose or fell as a result.
The motives of the trade were that the merchants can make huge profit by transporting goods across the desert.
The desert was extremely dry and the weather was very high temperature during the day and freezing cold at night. There is no food or water for hundreds of miles around and there were many scorpions. The merchants would have as many as 1000 camels and caravan across the desert with all of their food, water, and goods. They also had to defend themselves against bandits.
