LEPROSY - Bacterial Infection
An infectious disease known since biblical times that is characterized by disfiguring skin sores, nerve damage, and progressive debilitation
The leprosy pathogen is a bacillus called Mycobacterium leprae, surrounded by a characteristic waxy coating, found in clumped, rounded masses.
Spread through close physical contact with untreated lepers.
Symptoms:
Numbness or absent sensation in arms, hands, legs, or feet
Do not heal after several weeks or months
Decreased sensation to touch, heat, or pain

Treatment- A number of different antibiotics are used to kill the bacteria that causes leprosy Aspirin, prednisone, or thalidomide are used to control inflammation
Prevention- Prevention is to avoid close physical contact with untreated lepers. Long term medication renders lepers non-infectious.
