The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) The Endoplasmic Reticulum
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER), works mainly as a pathway in the cell, where molecules can move from one part of the cell to another.
The rough endoplasmic reticulum prepares proteins for export out of the cell or into the cell membrane.
Rough ER
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for synthesizing steroids, regulating calcium levels, and breaking down toxic substances.
Smooth ER

The black dots are ribosomes, which only the rough ER has.
The smooth ER does not have ribosomes on it.
