~Biography~ Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in the village Caprese, Tuscany on March 6, 1475. In 1488, Michelangelo became the apprentice to Domenico Ghirlandaio for 3 years and was taught the elements of the fresco technique. In 1492, Michelangelo learned anatomy and four years after traveled to Rome. In Rome he carved one of his first big projects, which made him well known among commoners. He returned to Florence, Italy and carved the famous sculpture of David (1504), amongst others and he also painted. Michelangelo started to work on Pope Julius II’s fitting tomb. Julius and Michelangelo were said to have admired each other and after Julius’ death, Michelangelo was pressured to leave his unfinished work and work for the new Popes. Back in Rome he started one of his most famous masterpieces, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1512), which he painted single-handedly. In 1534, he worked on the Last Judgement (1541) During his last years Michelangelo drew Crucifixion drawings and wrote well-praised poetry, as well as carving the Pieta. He was working on the Rondanini Pieta when he died, so it was never completed.
He made over 600 paintings, although he burned most of them before his death. The most famous of these is the sculpture David (below), The Sistine Chapel, and the Last Judgement. He is considered the Renaissance greatest artists.
