Sacrificing was an honor and the better people were sacrificed not the lower classes.
The Mayans believed in two separate worlds. The everyday world and the otherworld. The everyday world is the one they lived in. The otherworld was gods and spirits and were ancestors lived. The village chief was the leader of all the political stuff and religious stuff.

Maya Sacrifice
Mayans believed that if you died in battle, suicide, were sacrificed, or had complications during birth, that you went directly to heaven. However, if you were guilty of crimes, or were evil, you were transported into the Mayan Underworld. If you did not die in any of these ways, then you thought that death was a journey and you could possibly be reborn. The color red was associated with death as well as rebirth. The deceased had beads or other forms of currency in the mouth for money in the afterlife. Also, they had maize placed in their mouths which serves as food for the journey to rebirth. People were placed in flexing positions, and later in stretching positions.
