Czechoslovokia
When many Slovakians came to the U.S. they were illiterate. This forced them to take unskillful and grueling jobs in coal mines and steel mills.
In 1867, Hungary and Austria united under Franz Josef, forming Czechoslovakia. At this time, there was an option for all citizens, to stay in the nation or emigrate to the United States. Many stayed, but large amounts of the Czechs and Hungarian emigrated.
In 1870, there was a crisis in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The population was too large to feed. The agricultural based economy was in trouble, which led to massive numbers of immigrants (mainly Poles) from the Czechoslovakian region.
