A massive amount of teens in America use IM. 17 million 12-17 year olds use the internet (Lewis). This is 73% of this age group (Lewis). In Canada, 49% of 7-10 year olds use IM every day (Farmer). That is almost half of all 7-10 year olds. This number is shocking.
IM has a few negative side affects on writing. The problem is that American students are unable to see the difference between formal English and IM English (O’Connor). They need to know when to use each type of English, and when that happens there will only be positive things to say about IM.
In America, many people think that IM only has negative effects on writing, however there are some positive effects. This is much different than what most people think. The effects of IM are not all bad.
In your daily life, IM can have an impact. It can be a distraction while you are doing homework (Farmer) as well as impact your relationships. Since there is no body language or tone of voice, there can easily be miscommunications (Goessl). IM can have a negative affect on your daily life.
Because of this they use IM slang in work and emails (Farmer). This constant use gets them in the habit of using bad grammar, punctuation and abbreviations (O’Connor). Students are also writing papers with shortened words (O’Connor).
Teachers have found that the students are better editors because sometimes they re-read messages several times before sending to check for mistakes (O'Connor).
It has benefits over the phone too. With IM you can multi task, which is difficult with a phone (Goessl). Also, with IM distance isn't an issue because you don't have to pay for the expensive long distance phone calls in America (Goessl)(Benefits of Instant Messaging). Finally, you can hold more than one conversation at the same time (Goessl). These are just a few of the many benefits of IM.
Its is better than email because it allows instant responses (Goessl)(Benefits of Instant Messaging), easy communication(Benefits of Instant Messaging) and the ability to be like a normal conversation(Benefits of Instant Messaging).
Using IM instead of email or the phone has many benefits.
For example, teachers have found that students who use IM have an easier time writing (O'Connor). They are used to make their feelings words (O'Connor).

There are many uses for IM. It can be used to plan activities, to socialize and to work on school work (Guidry)(Farmer). At my school and many other American schools, we use IM to work on projects (especially group projects) and to ask questions about homework. There are many used, but these are the most common for Americans
