1. Limited Government
A limited government is not all powerful, but is limited to the powers granted to it by the people. There are certain actions its leaders cannot take, because they do not have the power. In the American government, citizens and leaders alike must obey the laws.
A republic is a form of government where the people rule by electing representatives to make decisions for them. Voting is important in this form of government.
Popular Soveriegnty is rule by the people. The American government is based on the concept that the ultimate authority is held by the people, not by the government or its leaders.
Federalism is the sharing of power between national (federal) and state government. This arrangement limits the central government's authority. The sharing of power between the states and national governemtn is one more check in the elaborate system of checks and balances.
Separation of powers provides for different divisions, or branches, of government that each have different roles and responsibilities. This keeps any one group from gaining too much power. Each of the three branches of American government (legislative, judicial, and executive) possess different powers and roles which are specified in the Constitution.
Checks and balances allows each branch of government to check over the work of the other two branches, in order to prevent any branch from abusing the power it has been given.
Individual rights are guaranteed to Americans in the Bill of Rights, which is the name for the first ten amendments to the Constitution. They include certain freedoms that the founding fathers didn't want the government to be able to take away. In America, we are guaranteed freedom of speech, freedom to worship, the right to own weapons, and the right to a fair trial, among many others.
