MEZEDES - Sardeles pastes, which if you have read the section on fish, you know that these are the small seasonal sardines which are salted in the morning and eaten that night, raw, like sushi.
DESSERTS - The only desserts they could find were gummy things with white dust on the outside from Syros called loukoumia or sticky brown things with nuts called baklava or kataifi.
HERBS - Rigani (oregano) is used a lot in Greek cooking appearing in most meat dishes, baked vegetables, sauces and of course on Greek salads.
PITA - A round flat bread of Middle Eastern origin that can be opened to form a pocket for filling. They were used for sandwhiches and a popular one called Gyro.
GRAPES - Were used to made red and white wine. They used red grapes, green grapes, and gold grapes.
WINE - Although many early civilizations make reference to wine, the ancient Greeks were the first to take their grape growing and winemaking seriously.
OLIVE OIL - Between the 7th and 3rd centuries BC ancient philosophers, physicians and historians undertook its botanical classifications and referred to the curative properties of olive oil.
