Coral reef habitats are located in the ocean. They require warm temperatures. They are in areas of strong wave action that carry food and nutrients. Most corals grow on hard rock surface.

Some famous coral reefs are: Great Barrier reef, Belize Barrier Reef, The New Calendonia Barrier Reef, Bahamas Barrier Reef, Red Sea Coral Reef, and Pulley Ridge.
In the Greater Caribbean there are some 500-600 species, while in the Indo-Pacific region as a whole there are perhaps 8-10 times that number.
