The Media's Influence On Teens Regarding Alcohol Use.
The media has a big effect on teens regarding alcohol. Many advertisements make their products seem like they will help teens to be more popular and solve their insecurities, and some teens do believe this is true. Some teens will pay what ever it is worth just to be cool. Advertisements for alcoholic beverages shows lots of people having a good time and no care in the world, but commercials just glamorize the situation so more people can buy the product. For with their glamorized commercials it becomes appealing to teens, but that is all that they see. Companies never show the after effects for their product, and how it can affect the consumer and others around them.
1) By the time teenagers reach driving age they will have seen 75,000 ads for alcohol (CQ Researcher, 1992). 2) Results from one study indicate that beer advertisements are a significant predictor of an adolescent's knowledge, preference, and loyalty for beer brands, as well as current drinking behavior and intentions to drink (Gentile, 2001). 3) Television advertising changes attitudes about drinking. Young people report more positive feelings about drinking and their own likelihood to drink after viewing alcohol ads (Austin, 1994; Grube, 1994).
4) Fifty-six percent of students in grades 5 through 12 say that alcohol advertising encourages them to drink (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2001). 5) American children view 2,000 beer and wine commercials per year (American Academy of Pediatrics, 1995). 6)The alcohol industry spends $2 billion per year on all media advertising (Strasburger, 1999). 7) The beer brewing industry itself spent more than $770 million on television ads and $15 million on radio ads in 2000 (Center for Science in the Public Interest, 2002). 8) 10 million people ages 12 to 20 reported drinking alcohol in the month prior to a survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Of this number almost 7 million were binge drinkers and another 2 million, heavy drinkers (National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, 2001). 9) The average age of first alcohol use is 13.1 (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2001). 10) Between 2000 and 2001 daily alcohol use among high school seniors increased 25%, from 2.9 percent to 3.6 percent (Monitoring the Future Study, 2001).
In this health project we discuss about how the media influences teens regarding alcohol. The television, the radio, and magazines make it seem fun to drink. Even though their products are for adults they glamorize it so much to the point that it attracts teenagers and even younger children. The media shows the fun parts of drinking, yet it never shows what it can do to you, friends and family. The purpose of this project is to pervade the truth of how the media influences teens. The media only makes their commercials’ seem fun to attract buyers, for it will not make you cool or boost your self-esteem yet it makes you un-cool and look remedial. Further more don't believe the hype because everything is not what it seems.

Even what people would think as the most innocent media references can be seen, as somewhat, as a bad influence. Take this picture for example; Donald Duck has a mug of beer in his hand. Many teens and younger children can be led to think that drinking is normal.
This video is about a teenage boy at a house party engaging in underage drinking. Under the influence, he thinks he sees a beautiful girl but that is not exactly the case.
This picture shows us a teenager that is partaking in underage drinking. He most likely had access to alcoholic beverages. Also, he could have been influenced by television or radio that this was a cool and the right thing to do. For even musical artist make it seem cool to drink, and some teens do it because their favorite artist makes it seem cool.
