There was once a girl who fell madly in love with a guy at her school. She couldn't tell him of course, because he was dating her best friend and she didn't want to break them apart. So she sat in the shadows and waited for when the moment would be right. As it turned out, her best friend dumped the guy because she wanted to date someone else. The girl still didn't make a move, afraid of what her friend would think. Years went by and the girl's feelings remained the same. Then, one day, her best friend told her she was moving away to another state and wouldn't be coming back. The girl was sad to lose her friend, but happy to finally have her chance.
The girl's friend moved away, but the girl was still too afraid to take the risk of asking him out without knowing if he liked her. Then one day, while waiting to perform in front of her school with the rest of the school choir, he pulled her aside and asked her to dance to the music the jazz band was playing on stage. She tried to get out of it, making excuses like she couldn't dance, but he persisted and she gave in and danced with him. She couldn't look up at him for fear of meeting his eyes and showing him how she felt with hers. Her cheeks burned. The dance ended when he bent her back over his arm, his face mere inches from hers. She couldn't breathe and was sure he would kiss her, but he didn't.
The girl was slightly disappointed but she now had her answer and she decided that the next time she saw him she would tell him, but she would make it a riddle to see if he could figure it out. As it happened, a few days later she ran into him in one of the hallways as she headed to class. She stopped him, gave him the riddle and walked away without looking back, but she felt his eyes on her back till she walked around the corner of the hall. The riddle was a simple one to figure out and that Friday, he found her in her choir class, pulled her aside, and said yes.
They dated for 9 long and happy months, enjoying eachother's company, and going out to dinner and the movies and any school dances they could. They even got to babysit for her parents at a christmas party together. Life was good and she couldn't be happier. Then, two days before she had to leave with her parents for Winterbreak, he gave her a promise ring and told her he would love her till the day he died. She accepted and said the same. She kept the ring hidden from her parents, afraid they would say it was too soon since she was only 16. They found out about it on Christmas Eve and her mom called his dad to ask about it. It turned out that he had stolen the ring from his mother and lied to her. He had told her that his dad bought it for him to give to her.
The girl cried because her parents and grandparents kept telling her that she had to decide what she was worth and whether or not it was good enough for her to date someone who lies about stuff like that. So she dumped him before she could lose her nerve. She cried for hours after the phone call in which she ended their relationship. Her family did everything they could to brighten her holidays and make her forget, and she did till she returned to school. That was when one of her friends came and told her what had happened the day before break. He had taken her into the school stairwell and made out with her...and fingered her. She was heartbroken already, and this ripped her heart right out of her chest. Her pain turned to pure rage.
The girl talked to the guy the next time she saw him and asked if it was true. He admitted it was. She couldn't believe the man she thought would always be there for her, and love her, could do this to her. She lashed out with her words, trying to cause him as much pain as she could, hating that she was so blind to what was going on. Her parents decided to move her away that year, right before spring break.. She gladly went, having nothing to hold her back. He would call her occasionally, still trying to apologize and get her forgiveness but she responded to him only with bitter coldness. Three years went by and the girl forgot her anger. She forgot the pain he had caused.
When he called one night in December, she answered. They talked for a while and confessed that they still loved eachother no matter what others said. They decided to try again. She tried to trust him, and gradually he earned it back. They dated for 2 1/2 months and her mom, as upset as she was by this, decided to put her feelings aside and give him a second chance as well, for the sake of her daughter. Thats when things went wrong. He went out to a nightclub one saturday in February. There, he met another girl. The other girl was upset and going through problems so he decided to try to help her and make her feel better. When he got her feeling better, she tilted her head up and kissed him. He kissed back. He concealed this from his girlfriend though, knowing it would hurt her. Three days later, he tried to break up with her the easiest way he could.
She didn't understand why and started getting mad again that, after everything, he would try to leave her for no good reason. That's when he confessed. He'd screwed up again. Not only had he kissed the other girl, but when she asked him to stay in her room with her for the night, he did. He told his girlfriend that he was helping one of his roommates relieve some anger and stress over something that had happened at the club and she believed him. When he finally told her the truth, she hated herself. She couldn't believe how stupid she was to fall for him again and let him back into her heart, just to have him rip it out again, and this time with the help of a complete stranger. She dumped him for the final time. Now, because her heart is destroyed, with noone to heal it, and noone to trust, she closed herself to all emotion, to avoid the pain. All she feels is an empty loneliness. She wears her masks each day, hiding her true feelings from her friends, showing them only smiles and someone who is strong.
Her friends are oblivious to the truth to this day, but she has gradually started to open herself to others again and let her emotions return, one by one, along with her abilities as an Empath. Gradually she started feeling the happiness, pain, stress, and frustration of others and she let it drown out her own deep, dark loneliness.
