Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union and the “Doomsday Clock” is permanently set to five minutes to midnight. In this alternate history of the United States, superheroes are real and are part of everyday society. The existence of superheroes has greatly altered the outcome of real-life events such as the Vietnam War and the presidency of Richard Nixon. Although the Watchmen are commonly referred to as “superheroes”, the Watchmen refer to themselves as “costumed adventurers” or “masked vigilantes” as only one of them possesses superpowers. The story begins when a former crime-fighter legion of retired superheroes reunite when one of their own is murdered. The Watchmen set out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes.
Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. Originally published by DC Comics as a monthly limited series from 1986 to 1987, it was later republished as a trade paperback, popularizing the "graphic novel" format. Watchmen remains the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award, and is also the only graphic novel to appear on Time Magazine’s 2005 list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present."
